Telescopic fishing rods are used by fishermen and women throughout the world for everything from saltwater game fishing to backcountry trout fishing. Some people don’t even own single or two piece rods any more, instead choosing to only use telescopic rods.
As far as telescopic rod and reel combos go, the High Altitude combo is one of the best I’ve found. It comes complete with a very high-quality rod, a tough Abu Garcia reel, and a very well-designed, convenient carry case. Sure, it has its weak points, but I feel that this combo is up there with the best telescopic rod and reels that I’ve ever used.
The High Altitude telescopic rod is designed to be compact but tough, making it perfect for people who fish in harsh environments. It comes with some unique features that will make your life a lot easier – but more on them later.
The reel, an Abu Garcia Pro Max spinning reel, is known for its durability and versatility, making it the perfect match for the High Altitude rod. The carry case is very cleverly designed with the aim of both protecting your combo and making transport simple.
The first thing I did when I got my hands on this combo was look closely at the rod’s features. In all honesty, I found them comparable with some of the most expensive rods on the market. Since the High Altitude rod comes in at a fraction of the price of high-end models, I can only conclude that it’s a great buy!
It is designed for people like hikers and backpackers who don’t have a lot of space for bulky fishing gear. Folding up to just 16 inches long, it will fit in most backpacks or hiking bags. Some of the other features I loved included:
The tough carbon fiber design. Weight reduction is a major consideration for people who hike or backpack regularly. It simply isn’t possible to carry a bag of heavy fishing gear, which is where this rod comes to the fore. It’s carbon fibre composition means that it weighs just 6 ounces. However, the strength of the rod isn’t compromised to achieve this lightweight design. In fact, I found it to be one of the toughest rods I’ve used!
An innovative hook holder. There’s nothing worse than packing up your rod and having loose hooks flying around everywhere while you hike to your next spot. I’m sure you’ve experienced something like this before. The High Altitude rod comes with something I haven’t seen before – a specially designed hook holder that will secure your hooks and prevent them causing problems. I loved it!
A removable butt. Telescopic rods have a habit of getting full of sand and dirt, even if you’re very careful with them. This can reduce their performance and lead to premature wear and tear. The High Altitude rod comes with a removable cap on the end of the butt section that’s designed to let you rinse the inside of the rod fast and easily.
Overall, the strength and manufacturing quality of the High Altitude telescopic rod puts it among the best telescopic fishing rods I’ve used. Although it comes in at a very affordable price, the design is not compromised. I’d recommend giving one a go!
The Abu Garcia Reel
A rod is only as good as the reel you pair it with. In this case, I felt like the Abu Garcia Pro Max spinning reel was as close to the perfect match that you could get. It is also tough, durable, and lightweight, which makes it perfect for backpacking and hiking.
When testing a new reel I look at a few things – their design, what they’re made out of, and how they perform. The Abu Garcia Pro Max passed with flying colors.
Built with a tough graphite body and a machined aluminum spool, you don’t have to worry about this reel breaking while your in the middle of a camping or backpacking trip. It’s design doesn’t let it down either, with a very impressive 5.1:1 gear ratio and a 7 bearing system.
To top it off, the Abu Garcia Pro performed extremely well, even when put under a lot of strain. Retrieval is smooth, and the drag peels off nicely when put under pressure. Sure, it’s no game fishing reel, but it will do the trick for pretty much any small-medium sized fish that you’ll be targeting with a telescopic combo.
The High Altitude Combo Case
The finishing touch that sets this combo above most others is the custom designed carry case. This case is designed with backpackers in mind, with both weight reduction and gear protection key features. The backpack mount points make it simple to attach this case to your backpack or hiking bag, leaving your hands free for comfortable walking.
The case is designed so that you don’t have to seperate your rod and reel, which is something that I found especially useful. It meant that I could put my rod away in a safe spot when I was walking between fishing spots, even when they were pretty close together.
The rod section of the case is built with a hard shell that will protect your rod from any external impacts or damage, allowing you to hike with an easy mind. The reel section is fully padded, and the tackle pouch can be attached or removed as desired.
If you’re looking for a high-quality, well-performing rod and reel combo that’s well designed and durable, you can’t go past the High Altitude telescopic rod paired with the Abu Garcia Pro Max reel. Perfect for backpackers and hikers, I really couldn’t find any faults with this combo.
The rod is both lightweight and very well designed. It performed very well under pressure, as did the reel. Throw in the traveller-friendly carry case, and you’ve got a combo that’s too good to ignore (in my opinion anyway!).
It’s a five out of five from me.
This is a very popular portable fishing pole and reel kit, and affordable. The kit includes a 5-piece graphite composite rod, with a cork grip, that extends to 6’0” with a size 20 reel, durable ceramic guide inserts, stainless steel hooded reel seats, and machine-cut brass pinion gear. It’s is a light action rod and has a line capacity or 100/6. All this is included in a soft-side 17”x9”x3” carrying case that has room for the rod and reel as well as some tackle.
It’s the perfect size for keeping in the car, out of the way, to have ready whenever you have a spontaneous opportunity to go fishing. Because it fits out of the way, you can keep it with you wherever you go. That’s not to say you can just hop out of your car and start fishing. It does take a few minutes to put together. But the convenience of the carrying case seems to make up for this. As the reel does not come with line already spooled, you can choose your favorite line to load it with.
Customers have caught bass, trout, pickerel, and pike, along with plenty of pan fish, and even some parrot fish in Hawaiian salt water. It’s very versatile and strong for its specifications, and convenient rod and reel set.
The hard case is 14” by 17.5”, small enough to fit in a backpack, a motorcycle saddlebag, or under the seat of your car or truck. It comes with an ultralight MS-S500T reel with smooth, ball bearing drive, multi-disc drag, 5. 1-to-1 retrieve, GyroSpin® balancing, and Twist Buster® line twist reduction. This is combined with a matching 4’6”, five-piece, ultralight rod for two- to six-pound test lines and 0.0625-to-0.25 ounce lures. The case even has built-in tackle compartments for your convenience.
This is a sturdy, long-lasting ultralight portable fishing rod and reel set. It’s light enough to be good for children to use, as well. Although it’s not for huge fish, we have caught pike and even a four-pound bass. With a four-pound line, it’s perfect for pan fish like crappies and small mouth bass.
The feel is very sensitive, so even beginning fishers can get a good feel of working the fish on the line and bringing it in, the most satisfying thing in a good fishing day. It’s easy to assemble, quickly ready to use. One problem though is getting it to fit back in the case again, it is just not as easy as it should be.
Overall, this is a popular choice for experienced fishers and new recruits alike. As long as you remember it is an ultralight, you will be able to fish with this portable fishing rod and reel set for years.
This is the newest portable rod and reel combo from a trusted company, and comes in at a very affordable price. What is great also is that it comes in a wide variety of sizes. The sizes available are 5’11”, 6’11”, 7’11”, 8’11”, 9’10”, and 10’10”. All sizes provide smooth telescoping action and an easily switchable left/right-handed reel.
The pole has perfectly elasticity, made with high density Carbon fiber mixed with fiberglass to make it hard and durable. It has a more short body with large spool and line capacity. The deep aluminum spool and double-color reel has one-line holes, instant anti-reverse, and power drive gear equipped for high strength. It has coiled bail string and an S-curve oscillation system for very good line winding. The computer balanced rotor and high tensile strength plastic body make it perfect for your fishing needs.
It comes in multiple lengths and actions, depending on your needs. But all of the sizes telescope down into an easy-to-carry size that’s perfect for throwing in the backpack or other camping gear, or making it easy and safe to carry through the trees to your perfect fishing spot.
We really like the flexibility and durability of this portable fishing pole and reel set. Though it doesn’t come with a handy carrying case, it does take up very little space in your own bag, and is kept protected from catching on things by its telescoping action. And you can’t do better than the Plusinno brand!
