Compact fishing rods, otherwise known as telescopic rods, are extremely popular among people who don’t have the ability to store or transport larger one or two piece rods. Usually, they fold up to a size which is easy to strap to a backpack or store under a bed. Couple this with the fact that they are cheap and, if you buy a high quality one, strong enough for most fishing needs, and you have the perfect rod. Personally, I own a couple of telescopic rods which are among my most valued pieces of fishing gear. I always have one in the back of the car in case I decide to go fishing on short notice, and have caught many, many good fish on them!

The Eagle Claw telescopic combo is one of the cheapest available online, and yet still receives relatively good reviews. Although the reel is not the best quality, and may need replacing after using it for some time, it is worth buying for the rod alone.
The rod is not only one of the most popular telescopic models on the market, but it is also one of the most compact. It folds up to just 16.1 inches, which means that it fits in most backpacks for fishing trips involving long walks or space restrictions. I know people who use it as their preferred kayak rod for the same reason – they can leave it folded in the storage space until it is needed, and it takes next to no room.
It is tough and durable due to its super simple design. Don’t expect anything fancy, because you will be disappointed. The stainless steel eyes are basically unbreakable, as is the one piece reel mount, as long as you don’t use a reel that is too big.
The reel is what you would expect for something so cheap, and probably won’t last more than a few months. It will seize up if you don’t keep it clean and oiled, but should handle most small to medium sized fish if looked after. The major negative is the pre-spooled line, which is extremely cheap and will tangle and catch on things extremely easily. I would recommend re-spooling the reel with some cheap mono.
Overall, this combo gets four stars due to the slight lack of quality of the reel and line. However, for the price, it is well worth the buy!
When I bought this combo, I was skeptical about its quality and how it would perform due to the fact that it is both extremely cheap and made in China. However, it has outperformed all of my expectations to become one of my favorite pieces of fishing equipment.
As any serious fisherman knows, telescopic rods aren’t always strong and usually don’t perform to the same standards of a single or two-piece rod. However, the manufacturers at Plusinno have out-done themselves with their clever design, which means that there is no real disadvantage to using this rod, even though it is extendable.
The unique locking feature means that once the rod is extended and locked in, it will stay that way until you have finished fishing. The carbon fiber and fiberglass composition gives the rod good flexibility and strength, allowing you to cast as far as you need to (within reason of course!). The tip of the rod is sensitive, allowing you to feel even the smallest nibbles, but is still strong enough to withstand tough fights with large fish.
As for the reel, it is about as good as you get for the price. The 5.2:1 gear ratio gives you plenty of pulling power, and the deep aluminum spool means you can get enough line on the reel to fight even the largest fish. The bail arm itself is large and strong, which means that you don’t have to worry about it breaking if not treated like it is made of glass.
With everything taken into account, this is one of the best compact fishing rod and reel combos on the market. It is tough, durable, and capable of catching decent fish. For the great price and good quality, it is a five star combo!
This is one of the more expensive telescopic rod and reel combos, and is probably the one to go for if you don’t mind spending a bit extra for a high quality product. The larger model, at 3.3 meters long, is suitable for targeting a number of larger species, and it is coupled with a quality reel which should hold up to a lot of stress.
The rod is constructed from high grade carbon fiber, which is a huge plus in my eyes. This makes it very strong and lightweight, but still flexible enough to meet all your expectations. The fact that it has nine individually constructed pieces means that it is able to fold down to a very small size, allowing you to easily carry it in a backpack or kayak.
Each of the extendable pieces locks in when it is fully extended, giving the rod almost the same strength as a one or two piece model. The eight eyes on the rod are all crafted to the highest quality, allowing smooth movement when fighting large fish and preventing any damage to your line.
The reel itself has an extremely well designed 11 ball bearing system which ensures super smooth movement and minimizes friction, again assisting you when fighting larger fish. The 5.2:1 gear ratio allows you to retrieve lures and loose line at a rapid speed, and the collapsible handle allows easy storage and transport. When casting, the line seems to flow off this reel smoothly, and it is easy to make long, accurate casts.
Overall, this combo gets five stars due to its extreme compactness, high quality, and ease of use. The only downside is the price, but it is worth it if you can afford it.
